Pandora’s box (of music)

Pandora is a pretty impressive app. Gave me some pretty good suggestions for my Tom Waits fix, although Tom is clearly means something diffeent to me than he does to the rest of the populace. Interesting interface and execution, though.

Instant Domain Search

Pretty sweet tool I found this afternoon, instantdomainsearch.com. Looks like it makes realtime querys to the whois directory and tells you if the domain you’re looking for is available or not, and it has quicklinks to suggestions while you’re hot.

The Dangers of the Duel Queue Netflix Account

greg greg @ 11:51 am — Filed under:

One of my new years resolutions was to take in a bunch of artsy movies that I have missed over the years. The best way to do this of course is with Netflix, queue up all those films that no one actually watches and lets get appreciating. In the interest of full disclosure, I have been inspired by this great podcast Cinecast which has some great entertaining reviews of movies past and present. If you have not checked it out you should, as I think it is the best podcasting has to offer.

Back home, we were on the 2 movies per month plan for Netflix, and my poor wife Miranda was having to deal with titles such as “In Cold Blood”, “All the President’s Men” and “Last Days”. Luckly, Netflix came out with the perfect solution for the cine-challenged family such as ours: The Multiple Queues on 1 account. We quickly rushed to the 4 movie per month plan (Kudos Netflix Marketing team, your plan worked) and split into our separate queues, ready for marital bliss with one less argument.

Well, this is where it gets complicated. One night last week, I watched Broken Flower’s, the new Jim Jarmusch film recently out on DVD. The next morning, my wife asked me if she should send the movie back or is it worth watching. Of course, Broken flowers was out on MY Netflix Queue and I immediately had visions of my wife taking a week to watch the movie and my well oiled Netflix operation coming to a grinding halt. I decided that the movie was something I enjoyed but Miranda would not enjoy as much. So I told her she should skip it and send it back.

While talking with some friends over the weekend, the movie came up and I expressed with them and Miranda how I enjoyed it and instantly my plan was outed. Busted. I tried to explain the I had done a complicated analysis of the film and determined that I liked it, but she would not. I guess I should have been an authoritarian dictator.

Miranda claimed I was under the influence of the positive review of cinecast and reshaped my opinion, but upon further analysis I think the darn netflix queue and my desire to keep those movies flowing caused a serious onslaught of selfishness. Beware of the seemingly innocent inventions such as the dual queue netflix. Complicated issues then follow.
